Models of sanitary appliances, England, 1895
The models are part of a set used during lectures at South Kensington, London, to demonstrate ‘Hygiene and Sanitary Science’. The lectures were aimed at public health professionals. The set contained examples of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ plumbing and ventilation – good water supplies and fresh air having been recognised as important factors for good health. The three models are of toilets with different U-bends and a soil stack vent pipe. The latter is intended to prevent the back flow of smells from the mains sewer coming into the home – it was sometimes known as the ‘stench pipe’.
