Military identity disc, England, 1939-1945
All British military personnel wore identity tags similar to this one during the Second World War. The discs were used to identify individual soldiers and were particularly useful if the soldier was wounded – perhaps even unconscious. Made of hard wearing materials, the discs could also help identify bodies that might otherwise have been beyond recognition. This disc belonged to a member of the Coldstream Guards of the British Army.
