'Household Medicine', book, London, England, 1897-1920
Household Medicine by George Black was first published in 1882. It was a medical reference guide for the home. The book has sections on anatomy and the workings of the body, food and their properties, exercise, nursing sick members of the family, women’s health and how to treat minor injuries and poisonings. However, the author states: “We have no intention of superseding the physician by making everyman believe that he can be his own doctor.” Black, an Edinburgh doctor, also wrote other manuals on medicine in the home and published from 1880-1892. The book was aimed at ‘everyman’ but was more likely to be used by women and mothers.
