'Actiontherapy Technique' by Sir Henry Gauvain, England, 1937
Sir Henry Gauvain (1878-1945), a children’s orthopaedic surgeon and the author of this book, recommended sunlight therapy or actinotherapy as part of the treatment for tuberculosis in the bones and joints. This type of tuberculosis was commonly known as ‘surgical tuberculosis’. Gauvain worked at a hospital in Alton, Hampshire, England, which specialised in treating children with this condition. Other aspects of the treatment included fresh air, a nutritional diet and immobilising the joints.
