Silver tongue scraper, Europe, 1701-1900
Tongue scrapers were used to remove the ‘furry’ deposits on the tongue. Scrapers were usually part of toothbrush sets and many were made from materials such as tortoiseshell, ivory or silver, like this one. The expensive materials indicate that this scraper was owned by a wealthy person.
