Sold by Lipcot and Company, ‘Oriental toothpaste’ was advertised “for cleaning and preventing the decay of the teeth”. Toothpaste pots bearing the name of the toothpaste and that of the supplier first appeared in the 1800s and were common from the 1840s. Before this, toothpaste and toothpowder were sold in stoneware pots covered with paper secured by string.
