The VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) was formed in 1909 to provide medical aid to the armed services. Volunteers provided first aid, hospital cleaners, ambulance drivers, welfare support and administration. VADs worked both at home, especially during civilian bombings, and abroad in field hospitals behind the front lines during both World Wars – when their numbers were greatly expanded. This booklet gives advice to the female members of the organisation who were perhaps unsure of what to expect as at this time it was uncommon for middle-class women to work outside the home. It provided advice on professional behaviour, bed making, how to monitor a patient and warned against idle gossip. The booklet cost sixpence.
