Jaipur artificial foot, India, 1982.
This prosthetic foot is made of wood and moulded rubber, and laces around the lower leg. It was used in amputation cases where the foot is removed at the ankle joint but the ball of the heel is retained because of its weight-bearing ability. The Jaipur Foot was developed in India in 1970 by orthopaedic surgeon Dr Pramod Karan Sethi and sculptor Ram Chandra. It was an appropriate, cheaper and aesthetic alternative to Western limb designs. It can be made in under an hour with basic household tools. The design has revolutionised the lives of thousands of amputees in the developing world.
