Lorand's Tokograph for monitoring labour, Europe, 1901-1925
Uterine contractions during labour were recorded using this instrument. It was designed by a Dr Lorand. The Tokograph was strapped to the mother’s abdomen with an elastic belt. Contractions were mechanically transmitted to a pen recorder which marked the chart. The drum revolved by means of a clockwork mechanism.
