Porte fillet with tape, London, England, 1887-1930
Porte fillets aided delivery in difficult births. It is an obstetric instrument. A range of obstetric devices and tools are used for different applications depending on the circumstances. The metal stem was known as an introducer. It was inserted into the birth canal. When it was withdrawn, the attached tape was left looped around the foetus. The physician or obstetrician gently pulled on the tape to assist delivery. This example was designed by J. Lazarewitch. It was made by instrument makers Down Brothers.
