Intra-uterine device 'Copper-Y’, India, 1970-1981
Its distinctive shape and material gives the ‘Copper-Y’ intrauterine device (IUD) its name. It is a contraceptive worn inside the uterus. An IUD works after conception. It stops a newly fertilised embryo implanting and growing in the lining of the uterus. The ‘Copper-Y’ IUD is shown in the centre. It was manufactured in India. The copper is toxic to sperm, preventing fertilisation.
