Wooden medicine bottle with woven string bag, Kenya, 1880-1920
Medical treatments would have been carried inside a woven string bag and stored in this carved wooden bottle. They were used by the Kavirondo people of Kenya. The exact contents would have only been known to the healer who made them. Each medicine is prepared for an individual, based on the healer’s knowledge and experience.
