Amulet necklace, West Africa, 1880-1920

Amulets have long been worn in most cultures worldwide to protect the wearer from danger, disease and harm. Hung on the chain of shells are carved animal horns and a blue beaded leather bag. Medicines were carried in the horns and bag to protect the wearer from sickness and disease.

    Glossary: necklace

    Ornaments worn around the neck, usually in the form of chains or strands of beads, pearls, stones, or the like, and often including a suspended ornamental pendant. Use "chokers" for short, narrow necklaces worn close to the throat. Use "dog collars (necklaces)" for wide ornamental bands worn tightly around the neck.
