Leather bag with objects for divination, Africa, 1880-1930
Inside the leather bag are 30 animal vertebrae, two pebbles, a hoof, two pieces of carved bone and one nut shell used by diviners. The 36 objects are cast onto a mat and the pattern made is interpreted by the diviner to determine the cause of a person’s illness. There are hundreds of possible patterns and interpretations.
