Four divination plaques on a string, Zimbabwe, 1880-1920
Used for divination to ask questions about health and illness by the Mashona people of Zimbabwe, the carved plaques are made from red ivorywood. The wood is rare and known as the ‘royal wood’. It is valued by diviners since it is believed to be the only wood that tells the truth.
