Scoliosis causes curvature of the spine. One attempt to ‘correct’ this curvature was by physically and rather painfully applying force to the spine to gradually straighten it. This partly incomplete apparatus was developed by Mathieu of Paris. It supported the patient in position during such traction treatment and the front and back of the apparatus can be adjusted. This was hopefully to ease the curvature of the spine over a number of treatments.
