Pharmacy cabinet, Middle East, 1400-1850

Measuring over a metre high, this pharmacy chest is made from cedar wood overlaid with brass. The brass sections are engraved and embossed with Arabic script and Islamic characters. The inside is decorated with mother-of-pearl. Islamic pharmacy drew partly on Greek knowledge of herbal medicine and also contributed new information about previously unknown plants and herbs. Islamic medicine also saw the opening of the first pharmacies, in the 1200s.
