Intra-aortic balloon pump, England, 1975-1980
A patient with a failing heart can be kept alive using this pump. It inserts a small balloon in the aorta, the large artery which carries blood from the heart. The pump controls inflation and deflation of the balloon. This regulates blood passing through the artery and into the rest of the body. The pump was used by Dr Andreas Pastellopoulos in Kings College Hospital, London. Pastellopoulos was one of the first people in the UK to use the treatment on patients.
