Camden cycle, occupational therapy device, Northampton, England 1930-1970
Patients with muscle weakness after a traumatic injury used the Camden cycle. It is an occupational therapy device. Its use was overseen by a physical therapist. This is a specialist trained in using exercise and physical activities to condition and improve muscles. There was growing interest in improving health through physical fitness after about 1850. This prompted the development of mechanical exercise machines such as this one. The cycle was assembled by the hospital workshops of the School of Occupational Therapy at University College Northampton between 1930 and 1970.
