Caliper for measuring human skulls, United States, 1999
Skeletal biologists use spreading calipers such as this to measure human skulls. Such measurements can provide much information about the former owner of the skull. This includes their age, sex and often their general health. This specialist device was developed by Jim Kondrat, of Paleo-Tech Instruments. He is an anthropologist based in Wheeling, Illinois. Professionals working in forensic science can also use it.
