An audiometer tests hearing. Michele Clements (1929-2002) used this example. She was a specialist in hearing in foetuses and young children. She developed the novel Pre and Post-Natal (PPN) Detector. Her research suggested the unborn foetus is not as isolated as initially thought. Clements was originally an ear, nose and throat specialist. She became interested in foetal hearing by accident. A pregnant woman came into the hospital, convinced her baby had died. Dr Clements’ pager bleeped and the foetus reacted to the sound with a strong kick.
