‘Explorer’ mobility chair, Bologna, Italy, 1995-2001
This ‘Explorer’ chair can climb stairs and move over other obstacles. It was one of the first of its kind. The chair is driven by a joystick, allowing the user to move forward and back. It automatically tilts when used on stairs, with the caterpillar-like tracks on the chair enabling it to grip and climb. The tracks span the distance between stairs. This is in contrast to later models where the wheels move independently. This chair was developed and manufactured by TGR in Bologna, Italy.
