'Carstairs' lightweight wheelchair, London, England, 1910-1920

The 'Carstairs' wheelchair allowed manoeuvrability in confined spaces, including up and down stairs. It was for use in hospitals and other institutions. The 'Carstairs' is a lightweight chair. A detachable wooden bar stops the patient falling out, particularly when negotiating stairs. It was manufactured by Carters (J & A) Ltd in London in the early 1900s. The chair was donated to the Science Museum in 2006.
