Vauxhall car fitted with mobility aids, United Kingdom, 1990-2005
This curious ‘double-fronted’ Vauxhall Astra is equipped with mobility aids to help disabled drivers. The Department of Transport’s Mobility Advice and Information Service (MAVIS) used it to demonstrate assistive technology and assess a driver’s needs. The technologies were occasionally updated and could be installed in different combinations suited to the driver. They were mainly involved in helping the driver to enter, exit and drive the vehicle.
