Glass ashtray from The Groucho Club, London, England, c. 2005-2007
The Groucho Club is at 45 Dean Street, Soho. It is a notorious private members’ club and celebrity haunt. This glass ashtray is embossed with the club’s name and duck logo. It is said to be the last such ashtray not stolen by members for souvenirs before the smoking ban on 1st July 2007. Concerns about the effects of smoking in public areas had grown over the previous decade. Passive smoking was a particular concern. Voluntary workplace bans were followed by various laws aimed at protecting people’s health from the damaging effects of smoke. These measures continued with compulsory bans on smoking on public transport. The 2006 and 2007 UK legislation outlawed smoking in enclosed public places.
