Enema syringe, India, 2005
Known as a Kashaya Vasthi Yanthram in Ayurveda medicine, this syringe is used to administer enemas. Known as vasthi, enemas are one of five procedures forming the Ayurvedic treatment called panchakarma. This involves cleansing and purging the body. The remaining four are vomiting, purging using laxatives, blood letting and cleansing the nostrils. A combination of herbs is inhaled, injected or eaten to produce the desired effect. Enemas are also used to introduce medicines into the body.
