Poster relating to smoking, London, England, c. 1970-1980
The hard hitting 'No Smoking' message on this poster is illustrated by the long list of health problems associated with the habit. These include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease, strokes, and cancers of the tongue, jaw, stomach, lung and oesophagus. The Health Education Council issued this poster in the 1970s in response to research showing lung cancer killed ten times more smokers than non smokers. Approximately six million people in Britain died from tobacco-related diseases between 1950 and 2000.
