Cross curriculum links
Cross-curriculum links
As well as being an excellent tool for teaching Medicine Through Time, this site offers a rich opportunity to link across subject boundaries at a time when cross-curricular teaching is becoming more of a priority in schools. These links include connections with Citizenship, Religious Education and History GCSE, as well as information on women in medicine and non-Western medicine, all of which can be found below.
Links to Religious Education
In particular the Belief theme will be useful for teaching RE. It brings to light how religion has affected both medicine and culture. This theme also covers how belief affects treatments and what action people are willing to take to prevent illness or promote healing. The Traditions theme explores how some medical traditions relate to religious practices.
More generally the ethics of medicine and changing attitudes are covered in many different sections throughout the site.
Links to the GCSE History curriculum
This website is particularly focused on the Medicine Through Time module, but it does cover many other aspects from the History curriculum. These include:
Women in medicine
Women have made a vital contribution to the practice of medicine. However, they were often sidelined or excluded from the formal medical profession so it is not always possible to find out as much as we would like about their stories.
Specific individuals can be researched using the search function or people section. You will also find extensive and more general information within the Practising medicine and Birth and death themes as well as entries on specific roles - such as midwives or nurses - that in the past were traditionally performed by women.
Non-Western medicine
Although the GCSE Medicine Through Time curriculum focuses on the development of medicine in Europe and the West, wherever possible we wanted to explore other medical traditions from across the world. Medical contributions from other cultures and traditions were something teachers told us they were keen to explore with their students. We also felt it was important to present a broad history of medicine from across cultures. This content can be found throughout the site, but in particular the Traditions theme focuses on a number of medical systems from around the world.
Where possible, we have included stories and examples from around the world, and from diverse medical traditions. However, this website is based on our collection of objects, the majority of which are from Europe. So the general focus is on those stories which can be told using our objects.
Links to Citizenship
You could use the different themes to create discussion topics, which would be a useful way to fulfil your Citizenship teaching goals, and link more broadly with other subjects. You can look at the discussion ideas to get some useful information on how to put this in to practice. The website also has many themes that relate directly to the Citizenship curriculum. These include:
