Treatments and cures - treating illness
Students will gain knowledge of the history of medicine with particular reference to illness and associated treatments.
Classroom activity - doctors and dominoes
Ask your students to research Treatments and cures on the Brought to Life website, making a special note of illnesses and ailments and their associated cures, e.g. malaria and quinine.
Using the information they have gathered, students should create a set of dominoes. Half the dominoes should have two illnesses or ailments and the others should have two cures. As with normal dominoes, the aim of the game is to match like with like, except that instead of matching numbers students will have to match an illness or ailment on one end of a domino with its associated cure on one end of another domino.
Students could create dominoes based on other pairings, such as medical pioneers and their inventions, or surgical procedures and the tools used to carry them out.
Treatments and cures - the development of scientific medicine
Students will gain an understanding of the work of key figures involved in the development of scientific medicine and an appreciation of where these developments fit into the timeline of the history of medicine.
Classroom activity - wordsearch
Ask your students to research Treatments and cures on the Brought to Life website, making a special note of the pioneers in this field and the treatments they developed, e.g. Paul Ehrlich and chemotherapy, Alexander Fleming and penicillin, etc.
Based on the information they find, ask them to create wordsearch puzzles using the names and treatments they have collected. These puzzles should then be swapped among students so that each will face a roughly equal challenge in completing one. The challenge is not only to find the words within the puzzle, but to link each key figure to the related treatment.
Students could use the same information to create crossword puzzles.
