Over millions of years natural processes gradually removed carbon from the atmosphere and buried it deep underground, where it eventually formed fossil fuels – oil, coal and natural gas. By mining these fuels and burning them to produce energy, humans have released the ancient carbon back into the atmosphere, creating an imbalance in the carbon cycle.
