Meet a Scientist: Wheel and Ramp Game
How cooperative are you? Do you play fair, or do you like to win?
Researchers from Queen Mary, University of London are carrying out real experiments into the psychology of fairness and cooperation, with Science Museum visitors as participants.
This event is part of the Science Museum's ongoing Live Science programme. It's a great opportunity for pupils to meet scientists and find out what they do.
About the event
The researchers will give a short introduction about their work pitched appropriately for the age of your group. Then pupils who have received parental consent to participate (see below) will complete the activity.
Three classmates will play a simple game where they roll dice and prize balls down ramps to distribute, accumulate and confiscate rewards between each other. The size of their final reward will depend on each individual player’s generosity and sense of fairness, but all rewards will take the form of a small toy or toys.
This activity can accommodate six children at a time. Three will watch as their classmates play the game (it takes 10-15 minutes), then the children will swap so the specators become players and vice versa.
Booking is required
School groups need to pre-book this event though the Learning Support Team on 020 7942 4777. Sessions last up to 30 minutes, depending on the number of students with parental consent.
Wheel and Ramp Game takes place until 27 March 2014.
Who can take part?
Everyone aged 6-13 is welcome to participate and the scientists will tailored the session to the age of your pupils.
Because this is a medical research project, parental consent is required for young people under the age of 18 to take part. When you make a booking for this event we will send you a consent form to pass on to parents or guardians for completion. The researchers will collect the completed forms on the day. Pupils who do not have completed consent forms will be able to do other activities. If no-one has completed consent forms we regret that you will not be able to take up your session. Please let us know so that we can release the slots to other visitors.
