On weekdays educational groups enter via the Group Entrance on Imperial College Road. At weekends please use the Main Entrance on Exhibition Road.

Admission costs
Entry is free but charges apply for some activities.

Opening times
The Museum is open daily from 10.00 to 18.00 (19.00 during school holidays). Closed 24-26 December. Check details here.

Hands-on galleries -The Garden and Pattern Pod
These areas require pre-booking for visits on term-time weekdays, so please tell us at the time of booking if you would like to include them in your itinerary. If they are not listed on your Visit Confirmation Letter your students will not be allowed to enter.

Supervision and code of conduct
For health and safety reasons you must accompany and actively supervise your students at all times. Unsupervised students and/or poor behaviour could mean that your group is asked to leave. The Museum is a public place so please remind students to respect other visitors, Museum exhibits and Museum staff.

General visits require 1 adult for every 15 students; specific activities require more supervision - please check the individual webpages for details. Students aged 16 and over require one supervisory adult.

Please ensure you have enough adults before you request your visit. Students arriving without accompanying adults will not be allowed into the Museum.

Planning visits
We strongly recommend you come on a preliminary visit to familiarise yourself with the galleries and routes around the Museum. 

Gallery redevelopments
The Museum is undergoing a number of changes and some of our existing displays are closing so that we can create exciting new galleries. Please check here for details.

Museum maps
Make copies of the Museum map for adults and students.

Storage for coats and bags
On weekdays during term time lockable storage is allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis on arrival at the Group Entrance. Space is limited, so please bring as little as possible. We cannot guarantee to accommodate your group's belongings and we do not have room for large bags or suitcases.

Storage is not available at weekends or during holidays.

Eating areas
We do not pre-book lunch areas but you can use the picnic terraces in the basement or any quiet uncarpeted corners of the Museum (except the Group Entrance area). Be careful not block through-routes, doors or stairs and it is helpful if you tidy up rubbish once you have finished eating.

Packed lunches may not be eaten in the Museum's cafes but snacks and drinks can be bought from the Eat Drink Shop in the basement.

Pre-ordering packed lunches
Lunch bags can be pre-ordered from our catering company, Benugo, at £3.50 per person.  Each contains a ham or cheese (v) baguette, blueberry muffin, raisin box and bottle of water. Alternatives are available for special diets. 
Call 020 7942 4483 or email to place an order, giving the date of your visit and the number of ham and cheese baguettes required. Benugo will send you an invoice for the cost.

Our shops on the ground and third floors get busy so we recommend visiting during the day rather than just before you leave. Goodie bags can be pre-ordered on 020 7942 4499.

Toilets are located throughout the Museum. Those marked 'boys' and 'girls' in the basement are not exclusively for children and may be used by adults.

Touching exhibits
Many irreplaceable exhibits are on open display so you can get close to them. To preserve their longevity please remind students not to touch or climb on them.

Photography and filming
Photography, sound recordings and filming are not allowed in the IMAX Cinema. Elsewhere handheld photography and filming are permitted, but tripods may not be used.

Let us know as early as possible on 020 7942 4777 and we will do our best to rearrange any pre-booked activities for you.

Changing your booking
You can change or cancel your booking for charged activities up to two weeks before your visit. After this you are liable for the cost even if you do not take up the places. Please read our full Booking terms.

If collecting monies from students please allow enough time to tell us about changes in numbers.

If you need to cancel your visit please tell so we can release your slots to other groups. 

If your itinerary includes charged activities you must send your cancellation in writing at least two weeks before the visit date. After this date you will be liable for the cost of the events. Please read our full booking terms.
