Printing the resources

The Science and Engineering Club boxes have student logbooks that need to be printed double-sided and assembled before use. There are full assembly instructions in the club leader notes included in the boxes, but in case you have any difficulties, try our top tips.

Can’t print double-sided

You may need to select the option to print double-sided on your printer. Go to ‘properties’ and click the tab labelled ‘finishing’. If you find a box called ‘print on both sides’, tick this and also tick ‘flip pages up’ to ensure that both sides are printed the right way up.

If you don’t have this option and can only print single-sided then the assembly takes a little longer, but you will have more robust logbooks. Just print all six pages and get your students to glue them back to back in the correct order, i.e.

  • Front/back cover sheet is stuck to page 1/10
  • Page 9/2 is stuck to page 3/8
  • Page7/4 is stuck to p5/6

Then follow the instructions to assemble the booklet that are in the club leader notes i.e. stack the three sheets on top of each other so that page numbers 1, 3 and 5 are in the bottom left-hand corner. Make sure that the sheet with page number 1 is at the bottom, 3 is in the middle and 5 is on the top. Then fold the sheets in half from A4 to A5 and staple them.

The back page is upside down

Go to ‘properties’ and click the tab labelled ‘finishing’. You should find the option to ‘flip pages up’. Tick this box to reverse the image printed on the back of each sheet. This should ensure that each side is the right way up.

Prints in portrait, not landscape

When you select your printer you should find an option to ‘auto-rotate and center’. Tick this box and you should see the image changing from portrait to landscape.

Can only print in black and white

Not a problem. All these resources have been designed to work equally well in black and white or colour.

Posters are not centred

The posters have been designed with an equal boarder all the way round the edge, but individual printers have their print areas set up differently so it may be that yours prints them off-centre. Find the ‘page handling’ options (where you can alter the number of copies you want) and on the ‘page scaling’ option select ‘fit to printer margins’, and also select ‘auto-rotate and center’. This should fit the poster centrally on the page.

Student handouts have club leader notes on the back

If you print the entire club leader notes in one go then you may find that some of the student handouts are printed back to back with notes that are aimed at you. To avoid this, just select the pages you want to print and hand out to your students and your printer will print these separately (double-sided if you choose).
