Mars Mission kit
This box contains three activities related to humans living on Mars. The science involved would be important during a mission to the Red Planet, but are also relevant to our everyday lives on Earth. Everything you need for setting the scene and getting your students prepared for a Mars ‘mission’ is provided in this box.
What's in the kit?
The kit provides:
- a 3-minute film to set the fictional scene of a (fictional) mission to Mars.
- all the equipment and for the three activities described below. These materials are mostly reusable.
- PowerPoint presentations to introduce the activities.
- student log-books for you to print.
- posters to advertise the activities through your STEM Club.
Rovers exploring Mars have to be able to negotiate a range of terrains. Using the materials in the kit, students construct a rover vehicle and choose wheels suitable for different surfaces. For an extra challenge we provide ideas for simulating a ‘Mars-like’ surface, just like real space engineers do.
Anyone going to Mars will have to think carefully about what to wear, since UV radiation on Mars is much greater than on Earth. In this activity students explore how to protect a simulated 'hand', which they have coated UV-sensitive paint.
Greenhouse environments will be key to humans growing food on Mars. The kit allows students to conduct experiments to find out the best way for setting up and managing a greenhouse that uses hydroponic growing methods.
