Talk Science Project

The Talk Science Project aims to give science teachers innovative tools and techniques to run contemporary science discussions in the classroom to help give students the confidence to find their own voice and have a say in the way science impacts and shapes their lives.

The aims of the Talk Science Project are:

  • To deliver training to teachers that supports KS3 and KS4 science curriculum requirements and Curriculum for Excellence to address issues of contemporary science and student understanding of How Science Works, particularly in developing interest in and enthusiasm for science.
  • To share Science Museum expertise on managing discussion around contemporary science issues from the very successful application in the Science Museum’s Dana Centre to classroom teaching.
  • To introduce secondary teachers to the contemporary science offer at the Science Museum.

The project divides into several elements:

  • The Talk Science: Effective Discussions in How Science Works one day teacher course, delivered at venues across the UK during the school year
  • Mystery Boxes and News + Views classroom activities
  • Student and teacher events
  • Talk Science Blog
  • Online classroom activities and guidance for teachers
  • A suite of four online games (available from February 2012).

The long term impacts of all aspects of this project are being measured and all findings are available on request. For more details contact: learningresources@sciencemuseum.org.uk.

The Project is supported by BP and also forms part of BP’s Enterprising Science programme which, in conjunction with the BP Trading Challenge roadshow, demonstrates the benefits of discussion inside and outside the classroom.
