In Britain, many of us don't want nuclear power and are pleased that no more nuclear power stations are being built. But according to some experts, nuclear power stations are a good thing.
Despite other people's worries about safety and disposal of nuclear waste, they argue that Britain would be mad to rule out nuclear power: it's a tried-and-tested technology that can deliver the energy we need without contributing to climate change.
In Britain we currently make about 3 per cent of our electricity using clean, renewable sources of energy such as biomass and wind. The government wants to increase this to 20 per cent by 2020.
However, even if we achieve this, we'll still have to generate 80 per cent of the electricity we need from non-renewable sources like fossil fuels.
Not only is this likely to speed up climate change, we will also have to rely on other countries for fuel when our reserves run out. Nuclear power could be a way of generating some of that 80 per cent without contributing to climate change.
We are making big leaps in developing our wind, solar and biomass power - maybe we could make a similar leap in improving nuclear power?
