Efficiency
Energy efficiency means making less energy do more useful work. Scientists are redesigning things from light bulbs to power stations to make them more energy efficient.

Electricity
Electricity is the flow of electrons. Electricity is usually made in a power station and transported to your home along cables. Electricity is a simple way of transferring energy to where it's needed. But electricity can kill if it's not handled with care.

Electron
Everything is made of atoms. Atoms are made up of a nucleus surrounded by even tinier particles called electrons. In a metal the electrons can move more freely than in other materials. When they all flow in the same direction they become electricity.

Energy
Energy powers our lives, giving us light, warmth, transport and much more. We use energy from the world around us - e.g. from oil, uranium, wind or flowing water - to make electricity and fuel.

Engine
An engine burns fuel to make something move. Steam-powered turbines are used in power stations to make electricity. Internal combustion engines are used in cars to make the wheels go round.

Environment
The environment is everything around us; the climate, the trees, plants and animals, the rocks, oceans and air.
