Oil Oil is a fossil fuel. It is a non-renewable energy source. When oil comes out of the ground it is called crude oil. Crude oil is processed to make oil for burning in power stations, as well as useful oil products such as petrol, diesel and plastics.
Oil platform An oil platform is the permanent structure that is built after an oil rig has drilled down to underground oil. Oil platforms can be on land or out at sea.
Oil rig An oil rig floats on the sea. It is only set up temporarily in order to drill down and look for oil underground. Once the oil is found, a permanent oil platform is built. The oil platform sucks up the oil and pumps it to the refinery, to be made into useful oil products.
Oil well An oil well is a hole drilled deep into the ground from which oil flows up to an oil platform. Oil wells can be up to 8 km deep.
Oxygen Oxygen is an element (it contains only one kind of atom). Humans and animals breathe in oxygen. Oxygen is necessary to make things burn. When oxygen and carbon atoms join together they make carbon dioxide.
