  Biomass / Key points

- Biomass was the first fuel that humans discovered - when they used wood to make fires.

- Biomass is basically anything that once was alive, including trees, plants, animal poo and food waste.

- The largest biomass power station in the world is in Cambridgeshire, where straw is burned to make electricity for 80,000 homes - a tiny amount compared to the electricity made by a normal gas power station.

- Despite this, biomass remains the most important source of energy in the world apart from fossil fuels.
