Effect of spine injuries

Damage to the spinal cord affects feeling and control of the body below the point of the injury, including the control of any internal organs. A broken neck can often be fatal when it happens between the first and second bones in the neck: the victim cannot breathe as the nerve that controls the diaphragm is severed.

Spinal injuries affect motor neurones in the spinal cord.
