Is Alzheimer disease inherited?
Most people with Alzheimer disease have not inherited it. However, people who carry certain gene variants seem to have an increased risk. In these cases the cause is likely to be a combination of environmental and genetic factors. However, in some cases (less than one in 100), the condition is clearly inherited from an affected parent (familial Alzheimer disease). In this type of Alzheimer disease the symptoms tend to appear earlier than usual. Altered genes are thought to be responsible.
