Trapped in the dark

Hi! I'm Tyrone. I'm 10 years old and I live in New York City. Recently we had the biggest power failure in our city ever. I thought it was really exciting.

I was at the Children's Museum of Arts when the lights went out. After a while a teacher came along and told us that all the electricity in the city had gone off.

Mum was supposed to pick me up but she was late. Her train wouldn't move because the electric rails stopped working so she had to walk all the way to the museum.

Outside the museum the traffic lights had gone off and all the cars and taxi cabs were stuck.

We tried to call dad, but mum's mobile phone wasn't working. The base stations that pass on the signal work on electricity and they were dead.

Like lots of people, we had to walk home in the dark. It took ages. I could see people with candles in their rooms, just like in the olden days.

When I got home we ate bagels and peanut butter because the cooker wasn't working.

The best bit was that the water wasn't pumping so I couldn't have my bath.

What is "Base station"?

What is "Electricity"?

What is "Power failure"?
