For a long time we haven't given a second thought to the amount of energy we use. Now people across the globe are taking a good hard look at the way they live and work to help reduce the impact their activities have on the environment. In particular they are looking at how much carbon dioxide they release into the atmosphere when they use energy, because of carbon dioxide's role in climate change.
The National Museum of Science & Industry - which comprises the Science Museum and sister sites around the country - is tackling its energy use and carbon dioxide emissions in a variety of ways, from building improvements to training for staff.
In 2009 the Science Museum signed up to the '10:10 programme', which aims to cut the amount of carbon dioxide we produce by 10% in 2010. Within a year we'd more than met this target - simple tactics such as installing more energy-efficient lights and more insulation cut our carbon dioxide emissions by 17 per cent.
