Radioactive
An atom that is unstable and may change into something else is radioactive. When it changes, harmful particles are released at the same time. Uranium fuel, used in nuclear power stations, is radioactive.

Recycling
Recycling means to reuse something after you have finished with it. Lots of homes in the UK recycle paper, cans and plastic. It often takes less energy to make something from recycled materials than from raw materials.

Refinery
A refinery is where crude oil is split up into different types of oil, such as petrol and diesel to put in our cars and oil for burning in power stations to make electricity.

Renewable
Renewable energy sources are immediately replaced as we use them up. That means they will not run out. They include energy from sunshine, wind, waves, tides and flowing water. Geothermal energy and biomass (e.g. wood) are also classed as renewable energy sources.
