Electricity and society

Today we don't know how we'd survive without electricity. But when it was first introduced, electric power was a novelty and a luxury. It was seen on the streets, in factories, shops and the houses of the rich long before it reached anyone else.

It was not always welcome. Some people were frightened of it - perhaps not surprising if you read on to find out about the unusual, and sometimes dangerous, uses for electricity in the early years.
