ALISDAIR MACDONALD REVEALS HIS SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BUDGET BOX...

Photographer Alisdair Macdonald has made Budget Day photos a personal speciality.

“I’ve probably spent weeks of my life standing in Downing Street waiting to take the classic Budget Day photograph of the Chancellor and his Red Box. You need to get a range of expressions – frowning, smiling and so on, because you don’t know until later what the budget news is going to be. It’s always a race to see who can get their images back to the newsroom fastest. It used to be a case of handing your film over to a dispatch rider who’d speed it back to the newsroom to be developed. I remember 1993, the first year that the agency photographers had digital technology at their disposal. They didn’t need to get their films developed. They simply transferred the images from their cameras onto a laptop computer, picked the ones they liked from the screen, and e-mailed them using their mobile phone. Their pictures were back in the office before I’d reached my dispatch rider at the end of Downing Street.”
