GARY JONES - MIRROR CHIEF REPORTER - EXPLAINS
HOW COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED THE FACE OF WAR REPORTING
War reporters risk their lives in pursuit of the story, and today’s technology means their efforts reach our front pages faster than ever.

"The news gets back instantaneously now. If I’m where the action is I can be talking straight into my satellite phone as it’s happening and the words will be taken down in London and go straight to print. Fifty years ago I would have had to trek out of Afghanistan to the nearest telephone line before I could get my copy back. A hundred years ago I would have had to write down all my experiences over a period of months and then make a decision about when to come home. The news wouldn’t come out until I’d completed the journey back.”
