NEWS KILLERS!

After the Second World War, proprietorial influence on the Mirror’s content was at its greatest. Newspaper baron Lord Rothermere ensured his financial activities and political beliefs made the headlines more often than not. During Robert Maxwell’s reign, Hugh Cudlipp warned him against forcing the Mirror to publish blatantly biased news.

“The newspaper is overexploiting the generosity of its readers. The MGN editors are also grossly over-exploiting in his own newspaper the personality of the publisher, not to his advantage and often to his detriment. There have been many occasions when ‘Robert Maxwell Makes News’, genuine and significant news and there will be many more…. But I suggest that the Editor’s decision in this delicate area should be based upon the following simple question: Am I deciding to publish this story (or picture) concerning the Publisher in his own newspaper in spite of the fact that he is publisher but because it is NEWS. OR Am I proposing to publish this item concerning the Publisher in his own newspaper because he is the publisher and publication might please him? An obsequious Editor will publish the lot regardless.”

Today Piers Morgan works for a board of directors rather than a single proprietor and has far greater control over the tone of the paper.
