A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NEWSPAPER EDITOR

“First thing in the morning I read all the newspapers, although I will have looked at the first editions the night before.

About 10am I get to the office, check the post and e-mails and look in the diary to see what is planned.

At 11am there is the morning conference. About 15 senior executives gather in my room and department heads run through their schedules for the day – the news editor, foreign editor, picture editor, features editor, 3am and sport. There will be some discussion about what we will focus on and some congratulations when we have done something well in the paper and the opposite if we have fallen down in some way.

After conference I will take and make phone calls, there will be meetings to go to and I have to keep talking to the desks – news, features and pictures. I keep an eye on what is happening on the TV news channels, too.

Lunchtime – sometimes I will go out for a business lunch but more often I have a sandwich at my desk – cheese and pickle.

Mid to late afternoon – I might ring contacts to try to get stories – everything from politics to show business. For much of the time in the late afternoon I sit at my terminal on the Back Bench, where the paper is put together.

At around 7pm we begin to draw up the front page. I can review what we have done on other pages and change them around, if necessary.

I stay in the office until about 8.30pm unless I have to go to an important function – like an Arsenal match.

If there is a big story around, I may do TV or radio interviews. I ring the Back Bench and News Desk throughout the evening for updates and they will call me if something big breaks. These calls can go on until the early hours of the morning – and the night editor knows he can call me in the middle of the night if there is something really big breaking.

Around midnight a set of first editions is delivered to me and I will have a look at them.”
