JOBS FOR THE BOYS

The print unions ‘ruled’ the newspaper industry for much of the twentieth century. Every printer had to be a union member and the unions controlled the length and entry of apprenticeships to each trade. Very often jobs were handed down from father to son. Women were not trained as typesetters.

This certificate marked the start of compositor Len Walledge’s training in 1938 and is shown with some of his union membership cards.
